Then there’s the decade check: this year it'll be 10 years in Finland, 10 years professionally barbering, 10 years vegan, 10 years with (a now much greyer) version of the same hairstyle. There's two things I quite enjoy: Paisley print on clothes and Rotterdam. Put them together, and I’m feeling Lekker! (My dutch language skills end here) . My love for Paisley started with a tattoo I saw on an old friend back in the UK circa 2008, and it’s been part of my style ever since. The day i met @kyoneclippers was an interesting one. Styling was fun and again inspired by @the_bloody_butcher impeccable attention to nuance and 'Rob stuff' (if you've unfortunately been unable to see him work, it's the best description i can manage I'm afraid, because his creativity is awesome). . STYLING: Blow-dry loosely with hands only; forget your brushes until that final dampness needs to be pulled out with tension up front. Then add half knuckle of @reuzel Severed Head Pomade lightly raked with fingers before using an outrageously wide tooth comb to shape that modern Teddy-Boy-Esque pomp with a loose ducks arse out back... I absolutely love my job, but scheduling variables sometimes has me pulling out my own hair instead of cutting yours. . That's right, we're talking no-shows and latecomers. . Simply put - time is money. It's not just pocketable profit (that's wages), but the upkeep of the store - rent, products, bills, security, tools, consumables etc. . I've spent a long time trying to find the perfect balance between joy and punishment - i love to see you all walk through my shop door but i also need to find a return if your delays affect my days. . So, without further ado; this is the new Por Vida Barbering 'Time & Punishment' terms and conditions: . Cancellations can be made without charge up to 12 hours before the service. For all cancellations made after that, a charge of 50% the full service rate will be billed - this used to be 100%, but sickness/work conflicts/transport issues vary so I won't rule with an iron fist but rather an iron finger. . For no-shows with no-notice or cancellations too close to the appointment (you can't cancel moments before & expect leeway), it's a charge of 100% the service rate - avoid this. . If you're over 5 minutes late for your appointment with or without notice - you'll be charged the no-show rate and told to rebook - i want to apologize here but i won't. I care more about your service so i won't rush it and i care about the client after you who might turn up on time and expect me to be on time. Working fast is possible but deserves a higher rate similarly to office based urgent requests. . Compare this to the Doctors, Dentist or Court - you're billed if you cancel late or no-show. Last month i celebrated my third visit to @theoldschoolbarberacademy . Not only did i study hard, meet old friends, create new ones and enjoy the overall ambiance of the Old School & Rotterdam; but i was reminded of an anniversary that started it all - My first visit; 5 years ago to the exact same month. . Why do I go to school? What is it that makes me want to step out of my busy daily duties, sacrifice paid time at work and study when i know how to cut hair already? . Quite simply put, it's complacency. . Whether you're a gang-of-one Barber like myself, or part of a larger team; it's easy to fall into the trap of repetition and plateaued skills. . Learning about the profile with @jelleinmyear & @the_bloody_butcher when taking photos @theoldschoolbarberacademy really opened my mind up to a number of thoughts when working in-store: Does it look good on camera? Is the hair cut well? Will the cut work well off camera? Can my client achieve this? . My newfound focus really changed the way i style the hair. I understand a photo exaggerates aspects of the hair style i want you to focus on, but i really altered the way I care about the cut. . There's something about the attention. I slow down to assess, comb, style, manage and finish the cut with a deep breath and a nod to recognising the work. . It's not like I never cared before, it's just that i think i've reached new levels in the relationship i have with my work and for that I'm feeling pretty warm inside. . For those nerds out there, I'll use a famous line from the movie Unforgiven, only slightly modified for flattop reasons: . 'It's a hell of a thing, killin' a crown. Take away all he's got, and all he's ever gonna have'. . Flattoppin' is fun. For a long time i was ignorant to the idea of learning more. I spent the first 4 years Barbering in a complacent state - I could cut hair, it was fine and i was comfortable. Perfect, right? . As i write this, I'm in my barbershop looking at my first @theoldschoolbarberacademy certificate - it's dated 28.06.2019. . 5 years later almost to the day - I'm back for course #3; the 5 Day All-rounder - and since my first visit back in '19, I've returned enough that one hotel staff member recognised me as 'the Barber' - who also rather flatteringly asked if i was teaching this time... . The 5 Day All-round Course also focused on Social Media & Photography knowledge, development and understanding; the real reason i chose the course and something i can't shake from my mind as I'm still processing the important lessons. During my 5 day course @theoldschoolbarberacademy i had an opportunity to spend time with @jelleinmyear . Now, Jelle and I have known each other since '19 but we've never really spent time doing anything aside from bad jokes and brews; I mean, he photographed me once so does that count? . Now, he played teacher and I made sure to pay so much attention... After all; The photography section of the course was part of why I applied. I love picking away at haircut tips & tricks, but the business building through portfolio creation was something i was eager to learn. . I really enjoyed this day. Not only was I able to throw out a classic side parted long-trim, but it taught me how to differentiate a haircut in a barbershop to how we present it in the studio, whilst focusing on highlighting different aspects of the cut - shapes, techniques and profile, plus utilising my own phone to also create images with the help of @joramvdgeer - my party-hard doppelganger but again, role model & tutor to the tech world and someone I've been bugging since the course with questions about all things social media... . I met @idefinland Top Chef Simon back in '21 to discuss Por Vida Barbering merch and it was love at first... Lunch date, actually; although i really did the showroom tour first!! . When we remove hair we consider what's left on the head, right? . With clipper work, it's easy to overshoot the shortest aspect of the cut and spend longer attempting to connect everything within a smaller-than-anticipated working area with guards and pressure!! . So why not utilize the clipper with its power and blade shape to create an easier canvas? That's right, we're talking freehand clipper work!! . In this example, I'm keeping a steady hand and angling the clipper outward and towards the baseline once I've reached beyond the parietal ridge; that's the widest point of the head. . This helps remove unnecessary bulk whilst creating a basic fade & connection point between the shortest point and transition between top to sides. . Most Barbers fresh out the barber school pod want to do a flattop because it's pretty much the 'rare cool haircut' that all traditional Barbershops do, right? . I get it, i like them too. Personally, i think they're pretty edgy because they're associated with two conflicting stereotypes: the short 'n' tight military taillight smashing conservative cop and the high 'n' disconnected wrecking-pit psychobilly punker. . Whatever the style your client chooses, just remember to take it slow and enjoy the ride when hacking off the most important parts of most haircuts - the crown and going above and beyond the parietal ridge for that gnarly ramp straight up. . I enjoyed my first in-store flattop initiation ... Because straight outta school i wanted to do a flattop, convinced someone it'd be great and then took 1.5 hours of internal crying under my fake concentration face to do it... There's two things I quite enjoy: Paisley print on clothes and Rotterdam. Put them together, and I’m feeling Lekker! (My dutch language skills end here) . The day i met @kyoneclippers was an interesting one. I knew i was meeting them, showcasing clipper know-how and sucking up big time to the company behind the entire electrical side of my barbershop - that's clippers, trimmers, foils & hair dryers - PLUS, they're behind the fancy @reuzel clipper, which is an absolute must-have for you hair cutting Reuzel fans out there! . So, when i met Kyone, why didn't i show off with a classic Uncle Ronnie cut; like a buzzcut or a boogie? OHHHH, NOOOOO, that's not how my life goes... . I was @theoldschoolbarberacademy on the 5 Day All-round course and those teachers knew how to test Students and this Scumbassador... . When a mullet grows out it becomes an interesting project. Quite frankly, it's the side panels that need growing out; the rest just needs some maintenance. . Ok, so where's the interesting part? THE TEXTURE BULK REMOVAL DIRECTION SHAPE THING... Of course! . This is really the case whenever a client comes in to maintain anything longer than a Vanguard and would prefer to keep the length. In this example i saw the internal square structure start to match up beautifully with the external profile image (the mullet flicks hugging the ear in line with the sharp beard - swoon!). . Styling was fun and again inspired by @the_bloody_butcher impeccable attention to nuance and 'Rob stuff' (if you've unfortunately been unable to see him work, it's the best description i can manage I'm afraid, because his creativity is awesome). . STYLING: Blow-dry loosely with hands only; forget your brushes until that final dampness needs to be pulled out with tension up front. Then add half knuckle of @reuzel Severed Head Pomade lightly raked with fingers before using an outrageously wide tooth comb to shape that modern Teddy-Boy-Esque pomp with a loose ducks arse out back... Swoon, again! But not before cushioning the end result and snapping a photo. . A little exaggeration on the volume really helped showcase the texture - I'm happy and my client is too. I absolutely love my job, but scheduling variables sometimes has me pulling out my own hair instead of cutting yours. . That's right, we're talking no-shows and latecomers. . Simply put - time is money. It's not just pocketable profit (that's wages), but the upkeep of the store - rent, products, bills, security, tools, consumables etc. . I've spent a long time trying to find the perfect balance between joy and punishment - i love to see you all walk through my shop door but i also need to find a return if your delays affect my days. . So, without further ado; this is the new Por Vida Barbering 'Time & Punishment' terms and conditions: . Cancellations can be made without charge up to 12 hours before the service. For all cancellations made after that, a charge of 50% the full service rate will be billed - this used to be 100%, but sickness/work conflicts/transport issues vary so I won't rule with an iron fist but rather an iron finger. . For no-shows with no-notice or cancellations too close to the appointment (you can't cancel moments before & expect leeway), it's a charge of 100% the service rate - avoid this. . If you're over 5 minutes late for your appointment with or without notice - you'll be charged the no-show rate and told to rebook - i want to apologize here but i won't. I care more about your service so i won't rush it and i care about the client after you who might turn up on time and expect me to be on time. Working fast is possible but deserves a higher rate similarly to office based urgent requests. . Compare this to the Doctors, Dentist or Court - you're billed if you cancel late or no-show. Last month i celebrated my third visit to @theoldschoolbarberacademy . Since my first visit, I've found a similar mindset to how i approach the gym - progressive overload; Gradually increasing the intensity or difficulty of Barbering over time. . 'A driver with 25 years of driving experience may be a great driver but might fail their test' is what i tell clients. Daily work may still be a success of course; we know how to do most things based on practical application. But the ability to expand what we know through further in-depth theoretical understanding will always help in practice - the balance of books and buzzcuts, right? . Learning about the profile with @jelleinmyear & @the_bloody_butcher when taking photos @theoldschoolbarberacademy really opened my mind up to a number of thoughts when working in-store: Does it look good on camera? Is the hair cut well? Will the cut work well off camera? Can my client achieve this? . My newfound focus really changed the way i style the hair. I understand a photo exaggerates aspects of the hair style i want you to focus on, but i really altered the way I care about the cut. . There's something about the attention. I slow down to assess, comb, style, manage and finish the cut with a deep breath and a nod to recognising the work. . It's not like I never cared before, it's just that i think i've reached new levels in the relationship i have with my work and for that I'm feeling pretty warm inside. . My friends @kyoneclippers met me during my visit to @theoldschoolbarberacademy . Now, I'm not sure whether it was my charm, good looks or too-fast-to-translate English speech that helped Kyone forget my inability to hold any professional conversation without an innuendo, the countless curse words or insults about bitterballen* - but they moved past the madness and saw my passion for quality tools... For those nerds out there, I'll use a famous line from the movie Unforgiven, only slightly modified for flattop reasons: . 'It's a hell of a thing, killin' a crown. Take away all he's got, and all he's ever gonna have'. . Flattoppin' is fun. It's clipper control, angles and having the confidence to destroy all that we've been told to preserve - the length on the parietal ridge, crown and throughout the center top whilst retaining the length on the edges... Weird, right? . Every time i visit @theoldschoolbarberacademy i try to pick up a little more advice to create this hairstyle - it's uncommon in-store but something I'd like to see more often and so with practice can come the willingness to offer them more. . For a long time i was ignorant to the idea of learning more. I spent the first 4 years Barbering in a complacent state - I could cut hair, it was fine and i was comfortable. Perfect, right? . As i write this, I'm in my barbershop looking at my first @theoldschoolbarberacademy certificate - it's dated 28.06.2019. . 5 years later almost to the day - I'm back for course #3; the 5 Day All-rounder - and since my first visit back in '19, I've returned enough that one hotel staff member recognised me as 'the Barber' - who also rather flatteringly asked if i was teaching this time... . The 5 Day All-round Course also focused on Social Media & Photography knowledge, development and understanding; the real reason i chose the course and something i can't shake from my mind as I'm still processing the important lessons. It was SO COOL. . Education IS key to success. During my 5 day course @theoldschoolbarberacademy i had an opportunity to spend time with @jelleinmyear . Now, Jelle and I have known each other since '19 but we've never really spent time doing anything aside from bad jokes and brews; I mean, he photographed me once so does that count? . Now, he played teacher and I made sure to pay so much attention... After all; The photography section of the course was part of why I applied. I love picking away at haircut tips & tricks, but the business building through portfolio creation was something i was eager to learn. . I really enjoyed this day. Not only was I able to throw out a classic side parted long-trim, but it taught me how to differentiate a haircut in a barbershop to how we present it in the studio, whilst focusing on highlighting different aspects of the cut - shapes, techniques and profile, plus utilising my own phone to also create images with the help of @joramvdgeer - my party-hard doppelganger but again, role model & tutor to the tech world and someone I've been bugging since the course with questions about all things social media... . I met my model, cut my model - something I'm used to on my daily grind. But on this very special day; i could immortalise the moment with one click of a button... I met @idefinland Top Chef Simon back in '21 to discuss Por Vida Barbering merch and it was love at first... Lunch date, actually; although i really did the showroom tour first!! . Quite frankly, the ease of a business relationship was as effortless as it was to make friends with Simon and developing new products, ideas and future endeavours was as comfortable as the garments we made together. . When we remove hair we consider what's left on the head, right? . With clipper work, it's easy to overshoot the shortest aspect of the cut and spend longer attempting to connect everything within a smaller-than-anticipated working area with guards and pressure!! . So why not utilize the clipper with its power and blade shape to create an easier canvas? That's right, we're talking freehand clipper work!! . In this example, I'm keeping a steady hand and angling the clipper outward and towards the baseline once I've reached beyond the parietal ridge; that's the widest point of the head. . This helps remove unnecessary bulk whilst creating a basic fade & connection point between the shortest point and transition between top to sides. . Don't sneeze, slip, have your client do the same or film anything whilst doing this - it's risky business!! . Most Barbers fresh out the barber school pod want to do a flattop because it's pretty much the 'rare cool haircut' that all traditional Barbershops do, right? . I get it, i like them too. Personally, i think they're pretty edgy because they're associated with two conflicting stereotypes: the short 'n' tight military taillight smashing conservative cop and the high 'n' disconnected wrecking-pit psychobilly punker. . Whatever the style your client chooses, just remember to take it slow and enjoy the ride when hacking off the most important parts of most haircuts - the crown and going above and beyond the parietal ridge for that gnarly ramp straight up. . I enjoyed my first in-store flattop initiation ... Because straight outta school i wanted to do a flattop, convinced someone it'd be great and then took 1.5 hours of internal crying under my fake concentration face to do it...
